Sgt. 1st Class Charles "Chuck" L. Adkins, 36, Clarksville, Tenn., was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan Saturday, April 16, 2011.

Born Jan. 20, 1975, in Sandusky, Ohio, he was a son of Charles (Velvet) Adkins of Milan, Ohio, and Sheila (Richard) Good of Hudson, Mich.

Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Lewis and Nadine Browning of Harts, W.Va., Weltha Adkins of Inverness, Fla., and sister, Charlene Adkins.

A 1993 graduate of Margaretta High School in Castalia, Ohio, Adkins joined the U.S. Army in November 1995. Stationed out of Fort Campbell, Ky., Adkins was deployed to Afghanistan in November 2010, his third overseas tour during his 16 years in the Army. His two previous tours were in Iraq. His recent mission was to train Afghan soldiers at a base in the eastern part of the country. His career achievements include the Bronze Star, Service Medal, four Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, four Army Good Conduct Medals, two National Service Defense Medals, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, four Overseas Service Ribbons, Air Assault Badge, Path Finder Badge, and the Combat Action Badge. He attended Spring Creek Baptist Church.

Additional survivors include his wife of 14 years, Sarah Lane Adkins; sons, Garrhett Adkins and Gavin Adkins; daughters, Makayla Adkins, Mackenzie Adkins and Gabriella Adkins; and grandfather, Cecil L. Adkins of Milan, Ohio.

Memorial services will be held at 1 pm Saturday, May 21, 2011, at the First Congregational Church in Hudson, Mich., with Pastor Thomas Burke officiating.

A memorial fund has been set up at the First Federal Bank, 539 S. Meridian Highway, Hudson, MI 49247.

Local arrangements are entrusted to the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson.

ADDISON - Captain Bruce Kevin Clark, Sept. 10, 1968-May 1, 2012.

He was born in Hudson, Mich., and as a Chief Army Nurse, died in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan.

He is the beloved husband of Susan and devoted father of two daughters, Camille and Catherine; cherished son of Lucinda Hallenbeck and the late James Hallenbeck, as well as Bruce and Bev Clark; admired son-in-law of Nancy Taber; loving brother of Amy Zacharias (Patrick), Jason Hallenbeck (Jessica), Justin Hallenbeck, Jamie Hill (John), Katie Yoder (Will), Joe Clark (Amber) and Christal Jones (Nate), and loved by brother-inlaw of Alexandra Newman (Logan), Mariana Barry (Gavin) and Sarah Taber-Thomas (Bradley). He is the treasured nephew to many aunts and uncles and is an adored uncle to many nieces and nephews. Bruce was preceded in death by grandparents Bernard and Harriet Bowman, La Moine and Alice Clark.

Bruce was born in Hudson and raised in Addison, Mich. Growing up there, he enjoyed 4-H, Little League baseball and trap shooting. He graduated from Addison High School in 1986. He enjoyed volunteering as an EMT and Fireman for Addison Fire Department. Married in 1999 to Susan Orellana of Spencerport, N.Y., they moved to Spencerport in 2000. Working as a surgical technician at Highland Hospital, as well as volunteering at the Spencerport Fire Department, he then graduated, cum laude, from State University of New York College at Brockport in 2006 with a B.S. in Nursing.

Bruce joined the United States Army Medical Corps in the fall of 2006. He and his family were stationed in Hawaii and Texas. At Trippler Army Medical Center at Fort Shafter, he worked on the Telemetry floor, and as the Nurse in Charge of the Allergy and Immunology, Endocrinology, Neurology and Dermatology clinics. After attending the Critical Care Nursing Course in San Antonio, Bruce was stationed at William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss, as a Critical Care Nurse. In March 2011 Captain Clark was recruited into a team competition and completed the grueling 26.2 mile annual Bataan Memorial Death March and was considered an invaluable member of his unit. He was deployed to Afghanistan with Joint Services in March 2012, and was assigned as Chief Nurse of the Forward Surgical Element in Tarin Kowt. His passions were his family, fishing with his daughters, snorkeling, hiking, stained glass, framework, a love for his faith, and the outdoors. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 19, 2012. at the Addison Middle School Gymnasium, 219 N. Comstock St., Addison, with Sr.

Helen Walling, I.H.M. officiating.

Visitation for Bruce took place Monday, May 14, 2012, at the Walker Brothers Funeral Home in Spencerport,

N.Y. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at St. Mary's Church in Rochester, N.Y. Interment was in Fairfield Cemetery, Spencerport, N.Y.
